Mit einem Zoom, kurz für Zoomobjektiv, kann man nur gewinnen. Denn an ihm lassen sich durch einfaches und schnelles Drehen verschiedene Einstellungen in einem Brennweitenbereich vornehmen. Somit kann ein Zoomobjektiv unterschiedliche andere Objektive mit Festbrennweiten ersetzen. Es zahlt sich also nicht nur durch die leichte Handhabung aus. Ein einziges Zoom nimmt selbstredend weniger Platz weg als beispielsweise jeweils ein Weitwinkel- und ein Teleobjektiv; dies ist gerade auf Reise oder im Urlaub ein großartiger Mehrgewinn.
Möchte man verschiedene Bildausschnitte innerhalb kurzer Zeit aufnehmen, ist man mit einem Zoomobjektiv gut beraten.
Kameras von renommierten Marken lassen sich mit verschiedenartigen Zoomobjektiven ausstatten. So hat man bei den Herstellern Canon, Nikon oder Sony eine Auswahl von fast bis zu 40 Zooms, deren Brennweitenbereiche 8 mm bis 400 mm abdecken können. Beim Traditionshersteller Leica ist die Auswahl beispielsweise wesentlich geringer, da hier weniger auf Quantität geachtet wird.
Egal mit welchem System man fotografiert, man kann sich stets ein Zoom zulegen. Denn sowohl Spiegelreflexkameras als auch System- und Mittelformatkameras namhafter Hersteller haben die Objektive in ihrem Repertoire. Bei Micro Four Thirds sowie Systemkameras gehören Zooms mittlerweile sogar zur Standardausstattung oder sind von Hause aus als Kit-Objektiv mit dabei. Deshalb muss man sich auch nicht um Anschlussprobleme beim Bajonett sorgen.
Mit einem Zoomobjektiv erreicht man für gewöhnlich eine hohe, wenn auch nicht die allerhöchste Qualität. So eignen sich die Produkte hervorragend für alle Fotografie-Begeisterten, denen eine sehr gute Abbildungsleistung wichtig ist. Für Berufs-Profis, die stets mit verschiedenen Objektiven hantieren, ist ein Zoom dennoch empfehlenswert, da es sich durch Kompaktheit und Leichtigkeit als unschlagbar praktisch erweist. Auch die Lichtstärke eines Zoomobjektives kann es meist schon mit einigen Festbrennweiten aufnehmen, da es vermehrt Objektive mit durchgehender Blende im Repertoire der Hersteller zu finden gibt.
