Für die Fotografie sind Stative ein unerlässliches Hilfsmittel. Sie verringern die Belastung des Fotografen, was vor allem bei der Verwendung größerer Objektive nicht zu vernachlässigen ist, und verbessern die Qualität der Fotos enorm. Hierbei kann hauptsächlich zwischen Ein- und Dreibeinstativen unterschieden werden. Einbeinstative haben dabei den Vorteil, leicht und platzsparend zu sein sowie schnell auf- und abgebaut werden zu können.
Die Verwendung eines Stativs bietet zahlreiche Vorteile: Durch die ruhigere Kamerahaltung können längere Belichtungszeiten für hellere Aufnahmen verwendet werden. Bei gleicher Belichtungszeit wird dagegen die Verwacklungsgefahr verringert, was der Bildschärfe zugute kommt. Dies hat beispielsweise für die Sport- oder Tierfotografie eine große Bedeutung. Einbeinstative eignen sich besonders für den mobilen Einsatz, wo eventuell sogar das gesamte Equipment getragen werden muss (z.B. bei Wanderungen oder Sportveranstaltungen mit mehreren Austragungsorten). Hier kommt es auf jedes Gramm und jeden Liter Gepäckvolumen an. Durch die Reduktion der Konstruktion auf ein Stativbein und die Verwendung von leichten Materialien wie Holz, Aluminium oder Carbon werden diese speziellen Anforderungen an Platzverbrauch und Gewicht bestens erfüllt. Bekannte Marken für Einbeinstative sind z.B. Manfrotto, Benro, Cullman, Gitzo, Hama, Sirui, Vanguard oder Velbon.
