Das traditionsreiche Unternehmen aus Wetzlar setzt im Bereich der digitalen Mittelformatfotografie neue Maßstäbe. Mit der S-Reihe zielt Leica auf Ansprüche professioneller Fotografen.
Das Leica S-System wurde erstmals 2009 vorgestellt und seitdem stetig weiterentwickelt. So entstanden Kameras, die ihresgleichen suchen. In puncto Bildqualität und Verarbeitung gibt es wohl kaum Kameras, die einem Vergleich standhalten. Bei der Entwicklung dieses Systems wurde besonders auf eine unkomplizierte Handhabung, extreme Robustheit, eine perfekte Abstimmung der Komponenten und Kompaktheit geachtet. So sind die Kameras kaum größer als eine Kleinbild-Spiegelreflexkamera.Im Segment des digitalen Mittelformates wurde eigens für das System eine neue Sensorgröße von 30 mm x 45 mm im Verhältnis 3:2 entwickelt. Somit ist dieser Sensor fast doppelt so groß wie beim digitalen Vollformat. Der größere Mittelformatsensor kann mehr Licht aufnehmen und hat somit einen größeren Dynamikumfang und eine bessere Detailgenauigkeit. Eine höhere Farbtiefe garantiert die Aufnahme von mehr Farbnuancen als bisher. Die Weiterentwicklung des Systems beinhaltet auch eine Steigerung der Bildqualität und Sensorempfindlichkeit sowie einen größeren Arbeitsspeicher.
Eine große Auswahl an S-Objektiven, vom extremen Weitwinkel bis hin zum mittleren Teleobjektiv, runden das Angebot ab. Aber auch Objektive anderer Hersteller lassen sich mittels der Leica S-Adapter ohne Probleme verwenden, teilweise sogar ohne Funktionseinschränkung inklusive Autofokus.
