Blitzgeräte kommen meist zur Anwendung, wenn das vorhandene Umgebungslicht nicht ausreicht um das gewünschte Motiv auszuleuchten oder wenn man bewusst einen bestimmten Effekt erzielen möchte. Blitzgeräte bieten aber auch vielseitige kreative Möglichkeiten wie zum Beispiel das Aufhellen des Motivs bei Gegenlicht, das entfesselte Blitzen oder das indirekte Blitzen.
Richtet man den Blitz nicht frontal auf das Motiv, sondern indirekt, zum Beispiel gegen die Decke, erzielt man ein weicheres Licht, das harte Schatten verringert. Das Ringblitzlicht, eignet sich hervorragend zur gleichmäßigen Ausleuchtung von Motiven auf geringe Distanz, bei der wenig Schatten gewünscht ist. Zum Beispiel in der Makrofotografie oder für bestimmte Effekte in der Portraitfotografie. Sie produzieren ein weicheres Licht als Aufsteckblitze, sind aber dafür nicht ganz so hell.
