Fotografieren ist immer eine Frage des Fokus. Ganz klar: Denn es ist das Objektiv, das den Fokus verändert und den Unterschied ausmacht. Und es ist immer auch eine Frage des Könnens, der persönlichen Vorlieben und Stärken. Selbstverständlich ist die Frage, welche Objektivauswahl der Fotograf trifft, aber auch der vorhandenen Kamerasysteme geschuldet - ob er lieber mit Systemkameras (CSC) oder mit Spiegelreflexkameras (SLR) arbeitet. Festbrennweiten haben keinen Zoom, hier ist das Auge des Fotografen gefordert, denn er muss wissen, zu welcher Situation welche Einstellung passt. Dafür haben sie eine besonders gute Abbildungsleistung bei sehr geringen Verzeichnungen, hieraus resultiert ihre Überlegenheit gegenüber anderen Linsen. Festbrennweiten sind für eine ganze Palette an Motiven geeignet, von Landschaftsfotos bis Porträts. Alle Objektive etwa von Lensbaby sind manuell einzustellen. Im Bereich der Festbrennweite finden sich neue leistungsstarke Klassiker, für die Digitaltechnik optimiert, beispielsweise von Leica oder die nach Originalplänen wiederbelebten und auf Digitaltechnik angepassten Objektive von Meyer-Optik-Görlitz. Unter den Zoom- und Megazoom-Objektiven sind leistungsstarke Linsen mit einem besonders großen Brennweitenbereich mit schnellen, nahezu geräuschlosen Autofokus geeignet für die Aufgaben Weitwinkel oder Tele. Hier bereitet Nikon großes Staunen mit dem weltweit ersten Ultraweitwinkelobjektiv mit Bildstabilisator, der selbst bei schwachem Licht für starke Bilder sorgt. Horizonte, die sich krümmen, und Pfeiler, die sich grundlos nach vorne wölben – jeder Fotograf kennt solche Schwierigkeiten. Verzeichnungsfrei zu fotografieren, ist bei Landschaften wie bei Architektur die besondere Herausforderung. Weitwinkelobjektive gibt es aus den Bereichen Festbrennweite, Makro, Zoom oder Fischauge, darunter ein besonders weit verzeichnungsfreie Objektiv von Canon. Während die Zooms und Megazooms den Bereich Tele mitabdecken, eignen sich reine Teleobjektive - sowohl als Festbrennweiten wie als Zoom - vor allem für die Tier- und Naturfotografie. Im Spitzenbereich erübrigen Linsen von Hasselblad und Leica aufgrund ihrer herausragenden Qualität jede digitale Nachbearbeitung. Olympus trumpft mit dem derzeit leichtesten und kompaktesten Tele (Micro-Four-Thirds-Anschluss), wohingegen von Sigma die erste Linse weltweit mit einer Lichtstärke von 2,8 bei 500 Millimeter Brennweite stammt. Ganz dicht ans Motiv – das Kleine ganz groß – das ist das Spezifikum des Makros und seines vielfältigen Einsatzgebietes. Für dieses spezielle Welt im Kleinen haben die meisten Objektivhersteller Linsen im Angebot Canon, Nikon, Sony, Leica oder Pentax ebenso wie Tamron, Sigma oder Samyang. Fish-Eye-Objektive haben Dörr, Samyang, Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus, Nikon, Sony oder Walimex im Programm. Mit der Fischaugenfotografie lassen sich kreative Ergebnisse erzielen und überraschende Effekte erzeugen, etwa Berge, die sich krümmen, und Wände, die sich nach außen wölben. Tilt-und-Shift-Objektive, etwa von Canon, Nikon, Laowa, Leica, Samyang oder Walimex, verhelfen dem Fotografen zur perspektivischen Bildkorrektur, das heißt zum Ausgleich von besonderen Verzerrungen, etwa stürzenden Linien in der Architektur. Denn „Tilt“ bedeutet Schwenken (des Linsensystems im Verhältnis zur Bildeben). „Shift“ hingegen heißt Schieben (beispielsweise lässt sich der Schärfebereich verschieben unter Beibehaltung der Belichtungszeit).
