Photo contest "Favorite places" - These are the winners

For each issue of Schnappschuss magazine, there is of course again a photo contest! However, this time with very different ideas, which do not necessarily have to exclude each other: quite the opposite! It all revolved around the theme of 'favorite places'. The Eiffel Tower in Paris, the annual vacation destination of childhood, the summer chess game in the park, the forest behind the house, your own allotment garden, simply having the sofa at home or your favorite people in your arms - at favorite places you feel safe, you like to visit them and something connects you to them. They are places that give you the feeling of being happy right there and reflect this happiness.

Over 4,000 pictures have reached us! You made the theme so individual and versatile, so we got to see a great variety of great pictures! The choice between special moments, your favorite people, landscapes, places or very special memories made the decision especially difficult for us. We would like to say a big "Thank you!" to all 1,500 participants! That was really outstanding. We would like to congratulate the winners and say THANK YOU!

Place One Photo Contest Favorite Places1. Place Werner Becker

The winning photo - "Taking a moment for yourself"

First place goes to Werner Becker with his fantastic tranquil shot of two people fishing. The photo is taken from the hand. However, the situation with small waves and many pinwheels on the horizon, was too turbulent for him. So he put the photo on a new layer in Photoshop, used the blur tool to create the blurred background, and then masked out the anglers, as well as the fishing rods.

Was a bit of work, but it was worth it! A justified place 1, congratulations!

2. Place Stefan Petershofer

2nd place - Morning rambles

Stefan Petershofer can be happy about the second place!

"This picture was taken in the fall of 2020 during one of my usual morning forays with my dogs through the forest. Usually it's always the same ones and at that time the first mushroom hunters were already out in the morning. And exactly such someone I have photographed here. It actually looks a bit scary in real life, at first glance."

"In this case I used a Sony A7III and the FE 24-70mm GM. However, I often take my Fujifilm cameras with me in the woods, as I particularly like their look in the forest. In the beginning usually very "bokehlastig", so with very little depth of field (eg mushrooms, butterflies, etc.). Somehow the taste became more and more special and now it is almost only forest in connection with beautiful light situations, but that mostly in connection with fog. Would actually call me a "nebulaphilic". Photography has been my hobby for several years, more precisely since the moment I started to walk with our dog (now there are two) every day. In doing so, I paid more and more attention to nature and then at some point felt the urge to somehow "capture" the whole thing."

3. Place Praxitelis Dimitriadis

3rd place - Silhouettes

3rd place goes to Praxitelis Dimitriadis. "The picture was taken during an evening walk through the city. The orientation of Hackerbrücke is designed to capture beautiful silhouettes during sunset. The small group enjoying a Feierabendbier chilled at their "favorite place" is there directly caught my eye. And what is a favorite place without the people who make it a favorite place? I have tried to reflect the beautiful atmosphere and mood with my image through the silhouettes. Photography is my passion and since I was born and raised in Munich, I now try to depict the city through the "eye" of my camera and highlight new and interesting perspectives. Inspired by Street Photography, I love to wander through the city in the golden hour."

4. Place Reinhard Burg

4. Place - A trip to New York

The photo of Reinhard Burg was already taken in May 2005 in New York on the occasion of a photo trip.

"I photographed the motif on the roof terrace of an apartment complex in the middle of the city with a fantastic view in all directions. I was particularly fascinated by the chimneys embedded there. The result was a series of photos from which the submitted photo was the most impressive. Originally I took the photo on a color negative film with 400 ASA on KB film. Hence the relatively heavy grain. I scanned this photo and after some experimentation, converted it to black and white. I did not make any manipulations. I even left the slight barrel distortion."

"The photo was taken with my Nikon and the fantastic Sigma 12-24mm lens I bought at Foto Koch back then. The incredible 114-degree angle of view really comes into its own in this photo." Reinhard Burg is an advertising photographer who learned his craft "from scratch", was already engaged in panorama photography in analog times.

5. Place Lucie K. Behrens

Place 5 - Burgau beach

Katharina Behrens wows us with her shot of her favorite place! "The picture was taken in Portugal, on the beach of Burgau last year, when I lived and worked in this area for a few weeks. "

"I've been traveling for 10 months at the moment, working as a photographer in countries like Portugal, Tenerife or Netherlands."

Place 6. Carsten Schröder

Place 6 - Joy

The sixth place on the theme "Favorite places" goes to Carsten Schröder.

"It was taken while I was shooting street photos in Saarbrücken. I saw the two of them, smiling, put on the camera and photographed them, which amused them both. Hence the joyful laughter in the photo. Street photography is one of my hobbyhorses and every now and then I get great results. You just need patience. Taken with the Fuji X-T3 with 23 mm fixed focal length at ISO 250, f3.6 and 1/100s.

About Carsten Schröder:

"As a photographer, I have been on the road for a long time and also pass on my self-taught knowledge to other photographers in courses and workshops. "

Place 7. Benny Kasper

7th place - A moment for eternity

Seventh place goes to Benny Kasper. He describes his thoughts about his picture like this:

"It's sunrise and the first rays of sunlight appear above the fog. I am alone above it all, looking into the distance. For that moment it feels like my own sky, free of everything. I wish this feeling would never end.

The person is looking for his place to be free from the stress of everyday life, a moment of silence and everything else that surrounds you. She finds a favorite place above the clouds."

Benny Kasper likewise has an NFT series to where this image is a part of. "Over the Fog it feels like in Heaven" is the name of this collection where he photographs various towers in the fog.

8th place Nicolai Brügger

Place 8 - Aurora

The picture of Nicolai Brügger was taken on a photo tour in Norway/Lofoten and takes the 8th place!

"In Lofoten I was with a friend to observe the aurora for a week. The mountain is called Offersoykammen. I had the motif in mind before the trip as I searched on maps which places would be suitable for such a picture. When the night was predicted clear, we went there for sunset. Through deep snow and steep uphill we reached the spot and waited several hours until the aurora finally came."

9th place - Karl Eißner

Place 9 - stage the morning

Karls Eißner discovered his favorite place while walking his dog Molly.

He staged with a friend morning at eight the picture as he imagines his favorite place. Together with his dog he likes to enjoy the morning hours, the great light and a moment of peace before the daily routine starts. To have a faithful companion always with you is something very special and so you enjoy your moment even more. Congratulations on this great picture!

Place 10. Sven Frank

Place 10 - Jöriseen

Last but not least: Sven Frank is the 10th winner of the photo contest. It was taken in summer 2020 during a hike near Davos in Switzerland. Pictured are two of the Jöriseen, which you can reach on a hike from the Flüelapass. Simply a magnificent spot of earth. After a few years of "normal" photography, I got to try my hand with a drone that summer and that's when this picture was taken. Since I'm in the region relatively often, it was a completely new perspective of one of my favorite places.

Camera Basics #19: Tilt shift lenses and the effect explained

The tilt shift effect is certainly an old shoe for many photographers, but this effect is very interesting to consider because it can be found in many facets of photography, so the use of tilt shift optics is not only at home in architectural photography.
