Für die perfekte Komposition eines Bildes spielt neben der Wahl von Motiv und Zeitpunkt die eingesetzte Technik eine entscheidende Rolle. Nicht nur Kamera und Objektive nehmen Einfluss auf die Bildgestaltung und deren Qualität, auch spezielles Zubehör wie Gegenlichtblende, Blitz und Filter sind maßgeblich für eine optimale Aufnahme. Filtersysteme fördern nicht nur Kreativität bei der Bildgestaltung ambitionierter Hobbyfotografen und Profis, sie sind auch ein nützliches Werkzeug, um nachträglich notwendige Bildkorrekturen zu minimieren, Aufnahmen unter besonderen Bedingungen zu ermöglichen und das Objektiv vor Beschädigung (z.B. Sand, Staub, Kratzer, Meerwasser) zu schützen. Unterschieden wird zwischen Filterhaltersystemen, bei denen ein Filter mit Hilfe eines Adapters angebracht wird, und Drehfilter, die direkt auf das jeweilige Objektiv geschraubt werden. Zu den wichtigsten in der Fotografie eingesetzten Filtern gehören Polarisationsfilter (Polfilter) und Neutraldichtefilter (ND-, Graufilter). Ersteres ist insbesondere in der Landschaftsfotografie durch das Entfernen von Reflexionen spiegelnder Oberflächen unentbehrlich. Bildoptimierende Effekte der Polarisation sind ein klareres Blau, schärfere Kontraste und der ungetrübte Blick unter eine Wasseroberfläche. Ein ND-Filter wird zur Abdunklung des Motivs eingesetzt, um insbesondere bei Tageslicht längere Belichtungszeiten zu ermöglichen und eine Überbelichtung der Aufnahme zu verhindern. Für Schutz und weitere Effekte kommen außerdem Verlaufs-, Skylight- und UV-Filter zum Einsatz. Zu den bekanntesten Marken gehören Hoya, Rodenstock, B+W und Hama. Auch Objektivhersteller wie Canon, Sigma, Nikon etc. bieten eigene Filter an. Daneben gibt es ein vielfältiges Angebot u.a. von Optikspezialisten wie Zeiss und Leica.
