Mit Objektiven der L-Serie spricht Canon vor allem Profi- und semiprofessionelle Fotografen an. Durch den konsequenten Einsatz staubbeständiger und wassergeschützter Dichtungen eignen sie sich auch für den Einsatz an Spiegelreflexkameras unter widrigen Bedingungen.
Die L-Serie deckt das gesamte Spektrum an Objektivarten ab. Vorwiegend vertreten sind Weitwinkel- und Zoomobjektive, aber auch Festbrennweiten und Makro-Objektive gehören dazu. Durch den Einsatz verschiedenster Objektive lassen sich immer neue Ideen kreieren und umsetzen. Mit einem Telezoom-Objektiv gelingen auch Portrait-Bilder oder wildlebende Tiere können unbemerkt abgelichtet werden. Ein Makro-Objektiv eignet sich hingegen, um die winzige Welt der Insekten zu entdecken. Eine L-Linse von Canon steht für Optiken höchster Qualität mit sehr guten Abbildungsleistungen. Die Objektive der Serie enthalten Fluorit- oder Ultra-low-Dispersions-Glaselemente, welche asphärisch geschliffen sind. Durch die Kombination von Fluorid und UD-Linsen, lassen sich selbst bei großer Reichweite chromatischen Aberrationen fast vollständig vermeiden. Abbildungsfehler in Form von Farbsäumen im Konturenbereich gehören so der Vergangenheit an. Zoomobjektive der L-Serie können mit einem schnellen und beinahe geräuschlosen Ultraschallmotor, sowie einem Bildstabilisator ausgestattet sein.
Das Gehäuse der Canon L-Serie ist meist aus Magnesium gefertigt und sorgt für eine angenehme Haptik. Der Durchmesser dieser Objektive ist gegenüber anderer Canon Modelle größer, was bei der Filterauswahl berücksichtigt werden sollte.
